Engineering Manager - Job Description


Company Overview:

Tiercon Corp. is an automotive supplier committed to the design, manufacture and assembly of quality exterior trim and assembled systems used as original equipment in the automotive market. Headquartered in Stoney Creek, the plants have design, mold, paint, assembly and testing capabilities. Tiercon manages 5 sites across 2 cities employing approximately 550 people throughout Canada. Tiercon is seeking knowledgeable, self-directed, experienced and hardworking individuals interested in the automotive industry as an Engineering Manager at our Paint and Injection Molding facility located at 591 Arvin Ave. Stoney Creek.

Job Summary & Reporting Structure:

Reporting to the Plant Manager, the Engineering Manager is responsible for all facility Engineering needs including building, paint, molding and assembly process stability and upgrades. Planning, procurement, installation and optimizing of all Plant and production equipment and processes. In addition, they will assist in the resolution of production problems, optimizing processes and ensure safety & environmental compliance. They will be responsible for managing all engineering, ensuring the policies and procedures outlined in the IATF Quality System are adhered to and continuous improvement is practiced wherever possible.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead root cause and improvement actions through cross functional teams in resolving production problems, i.e. bottlenecks, air balance, and implementing corrective actions.
  • Responsible for mold & paint facility equipment & automation (air handling, water handling, paint handling, HVAC, ovens) stability, effectiveness and process.
  • Test, analyze and assess production processes (SPC) to optimize equipment use, improve process flow, and set operating ranges and procedures for existing equipment; make recommendations to the Plant Manager on changes to procedures, purchases of new equipment, or plant/process/equipment improvements.
  • Lead plant capital project process for annual budget, progress reviews, and 5-year forecasts. Prepare & present projects for approval.
  • Work closely with the Plant Manager and management team to determine new equipment and processes, obtain quotes, write specifications, arrange for installation and follow-up to ensure equipment is installed on time while meeting operating standards.
  • Lead Program Launch activities for plant for manufacturing feasibility, process and equipment readiness including FMEA process, as outlined in Quality System procedures.
  • Oversee the operations of all engineering personnel, pre-treatment and waste treatment process; ensuring all required process & area checks are completed, recorded and under statistical control, PM program is maintained, recorded and continuous improvement projects are on target.
  • Ensure all engineering personnel are properly trained, competent and fully knowledgeable of all the Company's health and safety rules and IATF Quality System policies and procedures.
  • Manage all engineering personnel, ensuring all policies and procedures of the IATF Quality System are followed at all times. This includes, but is not limited to, handling employee concerns, performance management, hiring and orientation of new employees and training.
  • Responsible for manufacturing engineering and support of assembly and production processes.
  • Participate in and lead Lean Manufacturing initiatives (5S, Kaizen, Reduction of Waste)
  • Assist maintenance with improving equipment reliability through technical support and assist with preventative maintenance program; set-up of new procedures; recommend proper maintenance and clean up of equipment to production.
  • Oversee equipment cleaning, filtration, chemical suppliers & subcontractors.
  • Comply with all health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations, ensuring a safe work environment at all times through enforcement, promotion and improvement of the Company's health and safety practices.
  • In conjunction with the Plant Manager prepare annual budget and monitor performance of engineering departments, providing monthly explanations for variances to budget.
  • In conjunction with other departments, participate in identification and analysis of non-conformances or paint application/production/quality problems; and developing, implementing and verifying corrective action.
  • Participate in internal quality audits as requested, ensuring any non-conformances found in the Engineering department are corrected.
  • Promote continuous improvement in all areas of Engineering.
  • Environmental compliance and technical support of EHS environmental submissions related to plant & processes.
  • Remain current on all engineering techniques and technological developments in the painting/plastics industry. Utilize information obtained to improve efficiency of processes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • University Degree in Engineering or College Diploma and equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated experience and/or training in leadership, due diligence, financial acumen, APQP, PPAP, PFMEA, Design of Experiments, Project Management, SPC, complex mathematics
  • Demonstrated experience leading complex technical facility and industrial equipment upgrades
  • 10-15 years experience in a Technical/Engineering role.
  • Min 3-5 years experience leading technical teams.
  • Paint, Injection molding experience preferred.
