Engineer Weld Process - Job Description


Provides professional guidance, leadership, and training to other personnel; is responsible for, but not limited to, planning, and coordinating new manufacturing projects; improving manufacturing processes, layouts, and tooling. Also develops welding standards and parameters for current and new weld operations. Develops welding, testing standards and process improvements to develop more cost-effective methods of operation, improve quality, and meet internal and customer satisfaction specifications.

•B. S. in Engineering and/or other technical field with a preferred Weld Engineering Technology certification or 3-5 years related experience
•Engineering experience in a manufacturing field
•Highly proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook and Visio) and AutoCAD software
•Familiarity with Ford/GM/Chrysler change processes
•Excellent time management and work organizational (prioritization) skills
•Excellent analytical and problem solving skills to resolve new and unique problems
•Experience with designing and programming robotic/automated welding systems.
•Experience in destructive and non-destructive weld testing.
•Experience in the creation of process flows and PFMEAs
•Experience with root cause analysis and problem solving techniques
•Knowledge of weld fixtures and gage design.
•Knowledge of weld parameters and processes.
•Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
•Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
•Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
•Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
•Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
•Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

•Collaborate and communicate effectively across different organizational levels, functions, and businesses

•Process PMEA
•Support development of control plans
•Tooling/equipment sourcing and acceptance criteria
•Tooling equipment run-off approvals

• Mistake proofing identification and tracking

• Mistake proofing validation

• Set-up instructions

• Monitors project development, approval, and implementation schedules and timelines/Gantt Charts

• Attends builds at customer assembly plant

• Follow all policies and procedures as outlined in the IATF16949 and ISO 14001 Operating Manuals as they relate to the job function.

• Establish welding process and quality parameters for MIG and spot welding operations.

• Assist the programming, maintenance, and enhancement of welding paths on FANUC, ABB, or Motoman DX100, NX100, and XRC controllers as well as other robot manufactures.

• Support RFQ’s for new welding equipment

• Support machine runoff and machine acceptance

• Assist in maintaining proper methods and standards for the quality and production coming off the spot welders, mig, and robot welders.

• Establish procedures, processes and testing equipment for destructive and non-destructive testing of spot and MIG welds with the assistance from the Quality Department.

• Assist in Metallurgical Studies that must be performed.

• Research and recommend new ideas and methods to improve welding and work with the Continuous Improvement team

• Prepare written cost reduction proposals, including cost justification.

• Establish equipment standards required for the Welding Department.

• Participate in the concept and design process of all weld fixtures and participate in FMEA’s.

• Provide assistance, as required, for approved weld training programs.

• Develop and recommend welding systems, weld fixtures, robotics, and consumables.

• Assist with welding dimensional process capability for new and existing processes.

• Identify and implement fail-safe welding systems to eliminate discrepant processes and parts.

• Perform other duties as determined by the Engineering Manager.
